Santa Closets

Last night I spent about three hours wrapping Tyler’s Christmas presents. Well at least the ones that were small enough to wrap. He has three that are just too big to wrap so I put them in a big Target bag and slapped a bow on it. Once all the wrapping was finally done I then had to find a place to hide them. Big problem. He has already started snooping trying to find what I had bought so far. He knows that Santa will bring the bulk of his gifts when he comes but he also knows that his father and I buy some of the gifts. I don’t like to place his gifts under the tree until Christmas Eve. I put a few under the tree and save the ones that Santa brings until Tyler goes to sleep.

I was able to finally get them all hidden away and when I did I kept thinking that there had to be a better way. The answer came today as I was reading the newspaper. “Santa Closets a holiday hit for hiding presents”, the headline read. I read on and found an interesting way that some parents are able to hide presents that they have purchased for their kids as well as gifts for their spouses. They are using self storage units.

What a neat idea. Some of the storage companies are renting out the units for about $1 a day starting right after Thanksgiving through Christmas. Others charge a flat rate of about $32 a month which works out to be about the same as the daily rental if you leave your items in for a month.

Units are typically 4 x 4 and can be used to hide presents and big ticket items like televisions and recliners typically bought for spouses. You can also rent larger ones to fit your needs. The units keep the snooping kids away from the goods which means they will truly be surprised come Christmas morning.

For families who already are using storage units they just naturally seem to use the units for storing Christmas gifts. But for those who don’t have a unit, the companies are advertising them as options and the idea seem to be working.

I will definitely consider doing this next year. Not only can you store the items but you will have a place to go to wrap your gifts without having to do it while the kids or in school or sleeping.
