Save Money on Breakfast – Some Frugal and Healthy Ideas

As I mentioned in an earlier article, my children and I set out on a quest about two months ago, to find the most frugal, yet healthy breakfast ideas that work for our large family. We wanted healthy foods, that could be stretched and considered frugal. So after some research, and some trial and error – some of which worked and some of which failed, we have come up with some great frugal and healthy alternatives to the standard breakfasts offered.

Here are some of our great ideas, some of which even our pickiest eater (that’s the chocolate girl) will try:

Muffins – Create double batches of different kinds of muffins each week. They will last a few days and the children can eat them for breakfast or as an after school snack. You control what kind you make, but most kids enjoy some type of fruit in theirs. Do not purchase boxes mixes. Make them from scratch for the most frugal way to stretch your breakfast dollars.

Bagels – Bagels are a great frugal breakfast idea. They often go on sale, but even if they don’t, the store brand is usually quite inexpensive. Smear with some cream cheese (purchased on sale), or peanut butter, jelly, butter or even honey. So many different flavors can be found, but a healthy choice is whole wheat. Typically children won’t notice the whole wheat bagel when covered in some type of spread. You can feel good that you are feeding your children healthy, while at the same time they gobble up their breakfast each morning.

Omelettes and Scrambled Eggs – Save leftovers (ham, turkey, chicken and steak) and throw them together with some cheese and eggs and make an omelette or scrambled eggs. Veggies work great too, and can be combined with leftover meats to make a quite hearty meal that can sometimes last for two or three days.

Cereal – Probably one of the most expensive items in the store when you compare price per meal. And it is loaded completely with sugar and other unhealthy additives. Purchase a basic corn or wheat flake in your store brand, and add your own fruit. You can even use completely drained canned fruit, leftover fresh fruit, dried fruit and more. It is a much more frugal way to eat cereal for breakfast. You can even add other flavorings. Stir in a couple of drops of honey, syrup or brown sugar, where you can control how much goes in.

Oatmeal – Quit purchasing those little packets. I will admit we are so guilty of this, however we only buy when they are on sale and we have coupons to bring the price down further. However, making your very own oatmeal is simple. Purchase a canister of store brand oatmeal if you can find it. If not, just purchase the name brand. It will still save money in the long run. Make your own oatmeal and add your own flavorings. Vanilla extract, Brown Sugar, Cinnamon, Raisins, Fruit and many more items can be added to make this version much tastier and healthier than their counterpart packets.

I would love to hear what your family eats for breakfast that is healthy and frugal!
