It is time for my daughter to get a new bed. We spent on Saturday two weeks ago visiting a couple of stores and pricing out twin beds. The requirements for us were that the twin bed should be white, probably wood, have a headboard and a foot board, and be sturdy enough to carry her through until she leaves for college and maybe beyond.
Going shopping online and in the retail stores was a real eye opener. We hadn’t shopped for a new bed for about eight or nine years. Since then, it seems, the quality has gone down and the price has gone up. This reality hit home for us when comparing the bed we bought for my eldest son to what is currently being offered. Even with deals, we were looking at a minimum of about $400, and that was without the mattresses. To get the quality we envisioned, it would cost even more. Yikes.
Next, we turned to Craigslist. For about two weeks, we reviewed what was available. The key to shopping on Craigslist is to be patient. There is no need to jump at the first listing that you see, but if something interests you, it is best to inquire right away. If your budget is far off of the asking price, you can always request a lower one in your initial contact. The seller may not agree, of course, but will probably be willing to negotiate. To get a good deal, it is best to be honest and available.
We contacted a couple of sellers. Our preferred bed was tentatively taken, but we kept in touch with the seller. When the other interested party never showed up or responded to the seller, the bed became available again. It was in excellent shape, the price was good, only $60, and the owner was even willing to meet us half way, which saved us an additional $10-$15 in gas. We will spend an additional $5 on the bed in materials, as my husband is going to add a few extra slats to the bottom of the frame for strength and durability. Total cost will be $65 for a $450 bed.
A sheet set and comforter was purchased at a yard sale last year for $4. New sets at Target cost $70. I will be purchasing an additional set of sheets and a blanket in the future, to have as a spare.
