Saving on Seasonal Stuff

I admit that I complain quite a bit about how the retail stores are constantly rushing the seasons. For example, when did it make it okay to go ahead and put Christmas trees up in September? The holiday season is still months away, and I haven’t full recovered from the chaos of back to school. Heck, I still haven’t fully realized that summer is over. Do you know what I mean?

I’m waiting for the eventual moment when the merchandise is pushed so far back in the year that it wraps all of the way around and becomes timely again.

There is a bright side to the twinkling lights and the summer sales in February. That is that you can get some great clearance bargains right away. You used to have to wait until the week after a holiday, or at least the day after a holiday (or season). Not any more. You can get your bargains more than a month before. Crazy isn’t it?

I just came to the realization fully yesterday. We have a new purchase in our home, as I mentioned before, a nice cherry dining room table and chair set. We also have three kids and one cat, which means that there are frequent milk spills. The kids leave the milk on the table and the cat takes advantage of this. Needless to say, we have been going through way too many cloth table cloths. I’ve dug out anything that could serve, including small round ones, because I could never keep up.

Okay, this weekend was the last straw when I changed the tablecloth three times for various spills. We needed the dreaded vinyl table cloth. Off to Kohls it was. Of course the only vinyl tablecloth in existence in that store that would also fit the table had a Halloween theme. In fact, there was a good amount of Halloween home stuff, all marked anywhere from 50-75 percent off. General fall items were actually on clearance! I picked up some cloth place mats and another cloth tablecloth (yes, I am a glutton for punishment) that were 80 percent off.

I guess this marks the end of my complaining about stores rushing the seasons. We’ll see!
