Saving on Travel Down Under

Have you been watching Matt Lauer’s daily travel adventures on the “Today” show? Tomorrow is Day 4 of “Where in the World is Matt Lauer” and I’m not even going to bother guessing where the morning show co-host is going to be reporting live from.

No, I have my eyes set on Matt’s final day abroad. Unless there was an announcement that I missed about him not visiting this country I have no doubt that Lauer will wrap up his world travels in China. After all, NBC is televising the Summer Olympic Games and what better way to plug the massive sporting event than to have Matty show us how Beijing is preparing for this summer’s extravaganza?

So my guess for Day 5—China.

Okay, so how does this tie into this blog? Well, because the reason I guessed China is because when Lauer went on his annual globetrotting expedition in 2000 his final stop was Sydney, Australia—home of the 2000 Summer Olympic Games (which NBC also had the broadcast rights to).

Eight years later Australia is still a tourist hot spot (then again, it was long before it hosted the Olympics) only now getting there is cheaper than ever.

Take a look at the following deals that allow you to live it up in the Land Down Under without breaking the bank:

SYDNEY

Right now Virgin Vacations is offering a package deal to the Southern Hemisphere’s stellar city for just $1,499. The price includes roundtrip airfare from Los Angeles and five-nights hotel accommodations. However, the deal is only good between June 9 and 12 and between July 28 and August 25. The same trip on other summer dates costs up to $1,900.

SYDNEY AND MELBOURNE

Virgin Vacations is also offering a double package deal to Sydney’s urban jungle and the European-flavored Melbourne. For just $1,649 (provided you travel between July 28 and August 20) you will receive roundtrip airfare from Los Angeles; an eight-night hotel stay (split between the two cities); and a domestic flight between Sydney and Melbourne. The same package on other dates this summer will cost you more than $2,100.

AUSSIE COMBO

If you want to see all of the Land Down Under in a single trip then I would recommend booking Virgin Vacations 10-night travel package. For $2,759 (provided you travel during the month of August) you will receive roundtrip airfare from L.A., plus hotel accommodations in Sydney, Ayers Rock and Cairns (you’ll spend four night in Sydney, two in Ayers Rock, and four in Cairns) and all domestic flights. This guided tour will take you to some of the country’s most popular attractions, including Uluru, a red-rock formation better known as Ayers Rock, and the Great Barrier Reef.
