I enjoy scrapbooking, but I am by no means obsessed with the hobby. Translation: You won’t find me scrapping on the road. Unlike some of the die-hard scrappers I regularly crop with, I don’t make a point to collect mementos from every attraction I visit on vacation. Nor do I remember to photograph my family trying new foods or chilling in the backseat of the car, so I can incorporate the shots in a fab layout when we return from our trips.
That said I applaud scrappers who are able to think ahead and document their adventures in the moment. I guess I am too lazy or too busy trying to keep my kid from having a meltdown in the line to meet Mickey Mouse to jot down my thoughts and feelings on scrap pieces of paper. If I could get my act together in those moments, I would undoubtedly be able to pen amazing journal entries that would surely set my travel scrapbook apart from others.
Scrapping on the road is not that difficult; however, it helps if embark on your trip with a desire to do so. An experienced scrapper will tuck a pen and notepad into her purse and eagerly record funny anecdotes, mishaps and other adventures that take place during vacation. She will also make room for ticket stubs, programs, flyers and other paraphernalia, so she will have ample mementos to add to layouts when she returns home.
There have been a number of occasions where I should have scrapped on the road, but didn’t. For example, during one of our trips to Hawaii my then 3-year-old got her first taste of sashimi (raw fish). To this day I wish I would have thought about snapping a shot of her face when she bit into the Japanese delicacy. I could have easily designed an entire layout around it. What kills me even more is the fact that my local scrapbook store carries paper embellished with sushi and sashimi. I could have also used talking bubbles to add funny captions to the layout.
Learn from my mistakes! If you are an avid scrapper plan appropriately so you can fill your albums with wonderful vacation memories when you return home.
