Scrapbooking With Found Items

Found items can add so much to your scrapbook layouts and albums, with a spark of creativity there is so much you can do. What is a found object? It is essentially anything that would not normally be considered a scrapbook item or embellishment. So what kinds of things can be found objects? That’s what I plan to talk about.

I have almost become addicted to found items lately. We have been cleaning out old boxes in the basement and other areas of the home so we can put it on the market. While many things are being targeted for our garage sales, plenty of things have been reserved for my scrapbooking needs.

So what’s in my stash and what can you use?

I have poker chips, old greeting cards, a mini deck of cards, a diary lock and key (which I can count as two items), doll house miniature items, game pieces, puzzle pieces, baby hair bows, all kind of junk jewelry I can pull apart, old CD’s to alter and include on a layout, mini booklets, popsicle sticks, soda tabs, and even bottle caps. There is a ton more that I have, but if I sat here and listed it all, you’d never learn how to use some of the items.

With the CD’s I plan to alter them with some paint and use them directly on the layout, perhaps to highlight a photo or to journal on. For the poker chips I might paint them and use them as a background or tag on the layout. The miniature doll house pieces are small enough to fit right on a layout and be used exactly the way a normal embellishment would be used. Popsicle sticks will be painted or stained and used for titles, journaling or just decoration on the page. Old greeting cards will be cut up and their pictures altered or used as is. The diary lock and key I have not figured out what I will use for yet, but I know it will go on a layout, and I actually know where there are a ton more items. The mini booklets I plan to alter, distress and paint and create a whole new book out of and adhere to the layout just as you would if you were making one.

Look around your house and you will find all kinds of items that can be altered, painted or used as is on a layout. The junk drawer is usually the best place to find these items. What found items have you come across and how did you or do you plan on using them?
