Seasonal Decorating—Getting Your Home Ready For Fall—Part 1

Technically, autumn began a couple of weeks ago, but I don’t think Mother Nature got the memo because I live near the Canadian border and we’ve been experiencing temperatures in the 80s for the past couple of days. Of course, this has not stopped me from transforming my home into an autumn wonderland. Gone are my watermelon colored placemats and sunny yellow dishtowels. I have packed away my cobalt blue flowered tablecloths and stored my lime green pillow shams. Brisk temperatures or not I am ready for autumn.

Seasonal transformation is a relatively new concept to me. I grew up in Hawaii where we lack a change of seasons (it’s a minor trade off for the opportunity to surf and tan year round), so when I moved to the mainland I vowed to make the most of this special time of year by changing my home décor to reflect the change in seasons. The transition can be done easily and affordably with the suggestions below:

· Colors. Think sunset reds and apple pie brown. Basically, you want make your home toasty (to compensate for the falling temperatures) with warm tones: gold, yellow, burnt orange, sage, or olive green. The colors can be integrated into your home via dishtowels, cloth napkins, placemats, dishes, candles or even by placing a pumpkin colored rug in front of your kitchen sink.

· Now that you don’t have to spend time cultivating your tomatoes, bring in a few flowering plants and add them to the windowsills.

· Add scented candles, room sprays and potpourri with autumn-themed scents such as apple, cinnamon or clove.

· Place dried summer flowers (I like dried hydrangea) in small arrangements or fall leaves in bowls or vases.

· Change pillows from cotton to wool or velvet. Add quilts or wool blankets to the backs of chairs and sofas.

· Switch art pieces from prints to oils and summer or spring scenes to autumnal ones.
