Selecting a Sink: Kitchen Sinks

Whether you are building a home or renovating your existing kitchen, there are many decisions that you will have to make. You literally have to choose everything that goes into the space, including the kitchen sink!

So, how do choose a sink that provides convenient function and maintenance, and at the same time looks attractive and stylish?

Here are a few things to keep in mind when you’re shopping for a kitchen sink:

1. First decide which type of faucets and other features, such as a spray nozzle or a pot filling faucet, you would like to incorporate. Make sure these features will work with the type of sink you are considering.

2. A large single section sink, similar to the old farmhouse style, is a good choice if you need to soak or wash large bowls, pots, or pans. If you don’t like the single section design, you may want to opt for an oversized sink that has two extra large compartments. These styles provide more space, freer movement without excess over-splash, and more flexibility.

3. If your countertop is limited for space, you may not have room for an oversized sink. Instead, consider a sink that has one large section, large enough to set baking pans in, and another smaller section for rinsing dishes or washing vegetables.

4. Alternatively, a style with an off-set drain may be a good choice. The off-set drain is located on the side instead of in the center of the sink bowl. This way, you can still drain dishwater if there is a stack of plates soaking in the sink. An off-set drain design has the added benefit freeing up prime space in the cabinet below, so you’ll have more under sink storage.

5. You’ll also need to consider whether you want an above or below counter mounted sink. While the above counter or “self-rimming” sinks are simpler to install, the under-counter mount is flush with the countertop, which makes clean up much easier.

6. As far as style, color, and the material the sink is made from (stainless, copper, porcelain, acrylic, etc.), it will depend in large part on your design plan. Fortunately, there are many attractive styles, so you’ll be able to find several different options from which to choose, no matter what design style you prefer.
