Selecting a Theme

It’s a rare scrapbooker that can turn a bunch of random pictures into a cohesive story. Typically, memory albums are created with a particular theme in mind. By selecting a theme, it’s easier to sort photos and create layouts that yield a natural flow. This makes it much easier for a reader to make sense of your page designs.

Choosing a theme is a relatively simple task, or at least it should be. One of the most popular scrapbook themes is the holiday album. Whether it is Christmas, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Fourth of July or Easter, the sky is the limit when it comes to designing personalized pages to display your holiday photos. In addition, special occasions such as weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, and the first and last day of school can also yield outstanding themed books that highlight photos, stories and mementos gathered on the momentous occasions.

Another popular scrapbook theme is travel or vacations. My first scrapbook chronicled my travels from one end of the country to the other and included pages devoted to getting packed to pictures of the actual drive, plus funny things I saw along the way. My second scrapbook made use of an entirely different theme: friendship. As a gift to my BFF, I created a mini memory book featuring photos of our friendship, from fifth grade through college. It included sleepovers, trips to the beach, playing softball, swimming and our first attempts at mastering rollerblading.

Whereas I don’t own a pet, animal themes are among the most popular in the scrapbook community. If you are a pet owner, then you likely have hundreds of photos of your fur baby, which makes it a breeze to devote an entire book to your furry pal. Possible layouts could include chronicling how you got your pet, what happened when you first brought him home, and what life has been like since you welcomed him into the family.
