When cleaning up the clutter, I usually run into several items that just get tossed back into chaos because they need mending, or batteries installed, or just fixing up. The items can’t be used until they are repaired, but that never seems to happen, so these items just become clutter. One trick that we tried in our home has greatly helped with this issue, setting up a repair center at home.
What Is a Repair Center?
A repair center is a place where you can store items that need some attention. The items are kept out of general circulation so they won’t get in the way. The center should be set up somewhere out of the way, but within easy access to the supplies that you will need to make the repairs. Stock the area with batteries, needle and thread, buttons, scissors, different types of glue, small hand tools such as a screwdriver, paper towels and clean, and whatever else you might need. Also consider a trash basket or bag for anything that just isn’t worth repairing.
Knowing where to look when you are ready to cross a project off of your list will save you time. You’ll need to instruct your family members to add items to the center as needed.
Tackling Projects
If you keep a tote bag in your repair center, you’ll be all set to grab a project when you anticipate some time to tackle it. For example, if you are headed out to a child’s baseball game, the doctor’s office or even the school pick up line, you might be able to sew on a button or replace a set of batteries. This is time well spent.
Another great time to tackle a couple of projects is while watching television. During the commercials, you can run the newly repaired items to their permanent homes.
