Setting Your Priorities

weighing

Do you have a good handle on your financial priorities? You might be a person who doesn’t like to budget. Perhaps you don’t really know where all of that money goes every month. Then again, you might be a person who has a wonderful budget, but you don’t find that the money is going where you want it to go. This is where priorities come in.

You have priorities. For many of us, our financial priorities center on the everyday and urgent expenses in our lives. Sometimes this is all we can handle.

However, if you take a look at the everyday and urgent expenses, you may find that many of these are easy to plan for, even the urgent ones. Let’s use the example of vet care. Our cats seem to have urgent health care needs at least once a year, since they are getting older. After a big vet bill two years ago, I realized that I needed to plan instead of panic. Now we save money every month towards the vet bills that are sure to come, as well as buying everyday items like cat food. By doing this, urgent expenses become part of everyday planning.

You likely have security as a priority too. By this I mean insurance, retirement planning, medical plans, and all of those important things that often get left off the plate when we’re focused on everyday expenses. Sit down and think about what security means to you and where you’d like to spend your security money.

There’s also the future fund. You might be a person who doesn’t like to budget. Perhaps you don’t really know where all of that money goes every month. The future is my daughter’s education savings plan or some seed money for her to start a business. Maybe you are saving for a future time at home with children, or perhaps you are trying to renovate or build a new house. Dreams are also important. By dreams I mean those seemingly frivolous but actually important items like big trips. We’re saving to go on a trip next January. Yes, this might be frivolous, but I hope that it helps shape my daughter’s understanding of the world, and that’s not frivolous at all. What are your money priorities? “>fund.
