Should all homeschoolers join groups?

When the socialization question is posed to homeschoolers, the defense most used is that their kid participates in group activities or takes a class here and there. Recently, I have noticed people giving the advice that homeschoolers should HAVE to work in groups. I am hearing more and more that this is the only thing that would make homeschooling acceptable. While it is a good idea due to the fact that each family can use their strengths to teach the kids collectively, I don’t like the idea that it is being put out there that this IS THE WAY to homeschool.

Just as having a homeschool group and co-op has its benefits, it also has its downfalls. When working with a group of other homeschoolers conflicts can arise due to many reasons. There are different learning styles. Different family dynamics, and also the fact that children will learn at a different rate. While working in groups provides the best expert resources to the children, it can also hold some children back and frustrate others. Families can get over these stumbling blocks by remaining flexible at all times, and not making a long term commitment to a group, but instead stay involved as long as the children are being positively served. This leads to the other great downfall. When homeschooling together with groups of families, the dynamic is always changing as new people come, and old people go. It is hard to plan in advance in these situations.

So to answer my question, should all homeschoolers join groups, my answer is NO. This is not to say that homeschoolers should not join groups, but there is definitely value in homeschooling solo. If you as a homeschooler are planning to join a homeschool group or coop, then you need to do so strategically, perhaps joining one group to cover physical activity and get togethers, and another to cover difficult academic classes. Remember, your first focus is your child. Loyalty has to take a back seat.
