Sick Day Survival Games

We haven’t been having much fun at my house this month. Instead, we’ve had one sick child after another. I’m always glad when they are feeling well enough to get restless. Here are some things we do on recovery days when they are feeling better, but still not up to par.

I have a small dry erase board that is also a magnetic board. We have the low odor type of dry erase markers. The kids can draw, or if I have time we can play tic-tac-toe or dots. The magnetic part is fun, too. We have some architectural magnets, and magnetic poetry words. The kids can design buildings, write poetry, or leave a message or their board. We used to have magnetic checkers and chess but those pieces have been lost over the years.

When the boys were younger they had magnetic farm and construction vehicles sets that I’d bought for traveling. Those got brought out a lot for sick days, too. Geometric shapes are fun for making designs. We even have thin magnet strips that you can arrange into pictures. It’s almost like drawing with magnets.

When they were younger, stickers were a favorite sick day game. They would put stickers onto cards, make up stories, and forget they were miserable. It’s hard to color when you are laying on the sofa, but stickers are very manageable.

Reading aloud is another favorite recovery day activity. My children appreciate the company. Sometimes it’s nice too to have an excuse to cuddle up. We also do a lot of movies. Favorite movies from a few years ago are great. New movies entice them to stay awake. With old ones if they doze off during the movie they aren’t missing anything. If they are feeling cold, I warm up a blanket in the dryer for them. Cuddly blankets are a sick day favorite!
