Silly Sounds of the Season

left

Have you seen the Wal-Mart Christmas commercial where the guy insists on playing “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer” while an elderly woman wearing a leg cast looks on in disgust?

I walk out of the room whenever it’s on.

Conversely, my 7-year-old loves the TV ad almost as much as her beloved “Peggy” commercial.

Tis the season for crazy Christmas carols. Only this year my kid finally gets the joke and is obsessed with committing the holiday parodies to memory.

Grandma, help me!

Along with the granny versus caribou carol, my daughter delights in Bob Rivers’ twisted holiday tunes, including “It’s the Most Fattening Time of the Year.”

You know, because to a second grader the word “fat” is almost as funny as the sound of flatulence, so why not make merry singing about decadent holiday delicacies and the unconscionable eating habits that health experts warn against during this season of overeating?

The parody of “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” is also very catchy which makes it even more inviting for a youngster to yodel at the dinner table.

Another one of my daughter’s seasonal favorites is Rivers’ “Police Stop My Car.” The twisted tune takes aim at the fuzz and their alleged habit of racial profiling around the holidays. Believe me; my kid has no clue what the song is about, she just loves it because it is a parody of “Feliz Navidad,” which is her anthem at Christmas. She also takes liberties with the carol by adding “cha-cha-cha” at the end of each refrain and belts it out at the top of her lungs for good measure.

Clearly, not all Christmas parodies are appropriate for young ears. Some parents don’t have a problem allowing their kids to sing along to the strains of “The Twelve Pains of Christmas,” “Wreck the Halls” or “The Restroom Door Said Gentlemen” (sung to the tune of “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen”). Meanwhile, there are some moms and dads who carefully police the car radio so their children’s virginal ears are not stained with the sounds of silly seasonal songs.

What do you make of the crazy Christmas carols? Do you have a problem allowing your young kids to listen to the wacky warbles?
