Silly String: Lifesaving Gift for Soldiers?

Have you heard that Silly String or other brands similar to this product may be the best gift you can give our troops? It sounds, well… a little silly, but it’s actually quite serious. The Marines apparently came up with the idea but word is traveling fast. Silly String can be sprayed as troops enter buildings in order to locate trip wires. Talk about thinking on your feet! These guys know how to improvise!

If the string goes straight down, no problem. If it seems to hang in the air, it could be due to nearly invisible trip wires, which lead to booby traps and bombs. Who would have imagined that Silly String could save lives? It is also said that the glow in the dark Silly String is the most useful, since it can be seen at night or in very dark areas.

Some moms whose sons are in Iraq are collecting Silly String to send to our troops. There is a bit of a problem with the shipping, since it is contained in pressurized aerosol cans and is thus considered hazardous. It cannot be sent by airmail. However, a pilot has promised one mom to take a private plane and deliver cases of the stuff to her son and other troops in Iraq. He may not go directly to Iraq, but he’ll fly over there and make sure it reaches a staging area or base where it can then be sent out to troops.

Send Silly String to SoldiersHere’s the address of the New Jersey Mom that is leading this effort. You can contact her in care of the St. Luke’s Church for more information or to make a donation. Address provided by CBS, and you can read the rest of the story HERE.
