Simple Friendship Bracelets

There are many different styles of friendship bracelets that children like to make and share. You can even find friendship bracelet kits that are pretty cool. Unfortunately, some styles or kits are a little difficult for small children. If your child likes friendship bracelets but gets frustrated trying to make them, or they just don’t turn out, have her try these simple versions (with a little help).

Braided Friendship Bracelets

Teach your child to braid and to make bracelets at the same time. Select string, yarn, or very thin ribbon. Wrap around your child’s wrist, and cut the string or ribbon about 3” longer. Cut two more strips the same length. Your child can use only one color or mix colors. Tie the three pieces together at one end. Braid the strips and tie a knot at the other end. Cut excess from both ends. Glue on snaps or add Velcro for closures. To dress up these bracelets, glue on flat backed beads or tiny stones.

Beaded Friendship Bracelets

Follow the directions above, except you will need strands a little longer and you will only braid about an inch of ribbon at a time. Stop, tie a knot, add a bead, and tie another knot. Begin braiding again and continue this process until the bracelet is complete. For a clasp, you can make a loop at one end and tie it securely. Add a bead to the other end that slips through the loop.

Variations:

Instead of creating closures, you can simply use longer lengths or ribbon or string and use the excess to tie the bracelet on.

You can also purchase claps, which you can sew or, or teach your child to sew so she can attach them. It only takes a few simple stitches. You can also sew on cute buttons for extra embellishment.
