Snow Skiing in the Middle of Summer and Where to Get Bugged Out in the Big Easy

It may be sweltering hot in your neck of the woods, but somewhere in the world people are packing on layers of Lycra under their parkas and getting ready to cut into fresh power on snowy slopes.

If would rather glide down a mountain on snow skis than navigate wakes on water skis then consider heading to the Southern Hemisphere this summer to tear down the slopes of Argentina and Chile.

Some of South America’s most popular ski resorts, such as Bariloche, Argentina, Portillo, Chile, Valle Nevado, Chile, and Termas de Chillan, Chile (where a new casino and volcano-heated spa opened last year) are offering outstanding summer deals to powderheads and ski bunnies alike.

You can book the deals at places like ski.com, which offers escorted trips for individual travelers who would like to meet a larger group of like-minded people and take advantage of group discounts. Otherwise, you can look for hotel deals only. I saw one deal that features seven nights hotel accommodations for $1,570 per person, which includes transfers from the Santiago, Chile airport, four meals a day, six days of skiing and access to all fitness and entertainment facilities.

WHERE TO GET BUGGED OUT

For those of you who prefer to catch your thrills closer to home the Audubon Insectarium in New Orleans is hoping you crawl into their facility this summer.

Thousands of creepy crawlies are taking center stage this summer at the Insectarium. The facility was one of the first major attractions to open in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005. It is housed in the historic U.S. Customhouse on Canal Street and spans 23,000-square-feet.

Once inside your family can get their hands dirty at 70 interactive exhibits that allow you to get up close and personal with dozens of insects. Displays allow you to race against leaf-cutter ants, crickets and cockroaches; adopt a bug’s-eye view; and sample fried dragonflies in a “Bug Appétit” area. Other bite-sized delicacies are served at the Insectarium‘s Tiny Termite Cafe.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children.
