Songs Every Christian Should Know

In my previous blog I wrote about Bible school songs that I think every child (as well as adult) should know. But what are some “adult” (for lack of a better word) songs which everyone should know? When discussing this topic I think it is important to note the purpose of singing given in the New Testament. In Colossians 3:16 the Bible states: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” The songs which we sing to the Lord should praise Him. The songs we sing to the Lord should also teach and admonish those around us. Here is a list of just a few “adult” songs I think we should all know.

  • Our God, He is Alive. This song serves as a powerful reminder that not only is our God alive, but He is in control of the world we live in.
  • Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross. We always must remember Christ’s sacrifice on the cruel cross. We must always remember that we are only made pure through the blood of Christ.
  • He Leadeth Me. This song teaches us to fully rely on the Lord, and to remind us that we need to follow the Lord.
  • This World is Not My Home. I love this song. It reminds Christians that they are heading to a home in heaven. However, this song also reminds Christians that they are just pilgrims living in the world.
  • Be Still and Know that I am God. This very simple song comes directly from the Bible in Psalm 46:10.
  • A Common Love. This is also a very simple song. However, it proclaims the powerful bond that Christians have with each other through the Lord.

I know that there are many other songs which share a powerful message and serve as wonderful reminders to Christians; however, I just picked a few to share with you. What songs do you think every Christian should know?
