Special Anniversaries

It’s actually kind of strange the way special anniversaries are designated. For example, there is a 52nd and 67th but the other numbers that don’t end in zero or five are not always represented. I don’t know what makes particular numbers special.

Of course, most people celebrate the five and ten year marks, and certain ones have been given greater significance such as silver and golden anniversaries (the 25th and 50th respectively). There are many different lists that describe the types of gifts that should be given and the way in which specific anniversaries should be celebrated. There are traditional gifts and modern gifts, symbols, and more. One example is the tenth wedding anniversary. The traditional gifts should be tin (or aluminum). The modern gift reference suggests diamonds. Hey, I’m liking this modern stuff!

While you may already be aware of some of the more common anniversary facts, did you know that there is a designation for a 100th wedding anniversary celebration? I’m guessing that there aren’t many people who make it to that one (sounds like a good topic of research for a separate article). If however, you should make it that far, you’ll need to know what type of gift is appropriate. There is no traditional reference but the modern suggestion is a 10K diamond!

Personally, I’d like to see that one come a bit earlier. Even if I do live to be well over 100 and have the opportunity to be married for 100 years, I’m thinking a 10 karat rock might just be a little heavy for my delicate hands! Let’s see if we can bump that one up a few years, shall we? Maybe we can trade for the gift suggestion that marks the 75th anniversary which calls for diamonds and “diamond like” gems. After I’m over 100, I probably wouldn’t know the difference anyway, and I figure I have a better chance of actually seeing my 75th anniversary. I’ve only got 63 years to go!

Which anniversary will you be celebrating this year?
