Splurging

Although I recently shared “5 Tips for a Fitter Thanksgiving,” I don’t want to give anyone the impression that you absolutely can’t or shouldn’t splurge. In fact, I might not follow my own tips.

I think it comes down to the reality that splurging doesn’t necessarily cancel out all of the work you have done up until Thanksgiving. Your exercise and healthy eating doesn’t go out the window. You won’t suddenly put on 10 pounds because you enjoyed one day of good food.

At the same time, I failed to mention in my last blog that not everything you prepare has to be laden with fat and calories. In fact, you may not realize that turkey is actually some of the leanest meat you can eat.

You can always skip the mashed potatoes and go right for the carrots. But at the same time, it’s not a crime to enjoy one day of feasting. The key is being able to get back to healthy eating and exercise the next day.

For you “Black Friday” shoppers you just might end up walking off a lot of the calories you consumed. Just make sure Thanksgiving on Thursday doesn’t turn into an eating fest that lasts through the rest of the weekend.

The next question might be what to do with the leftovers. If you were the one who cooked the food, only keep the healthier leftovers. Send the rest home with others.

If someone else hosted Thanksgiving and they offer leftovers, choose the healthier items. You don’t have to spend the next few days gorging.

This is especially true with desserts. If you know that you won’t be able to resist the temptation to eat leftover pie on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, then give it away or throw it away. While one day of desserts won’t sabotage your diet, several days will make an impact.
