Starting a Journey to be Healthy

Well this is the start of my journey through weight loss. If you have not read any of my blogs before I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer 12/29/2005/ I underwent chemo therapy, radiation, a lumpectomy, bilateral prophylactic mastectomies and multiple reconstructions.

I have done everything medically and surgically that I could do in order to attempt to prevent a recurrence. With my particular type of breast cancer; triple negative; the rate of recurrence is higher and the survival rate was lower so I want to see what I can do to help me be here for my husband and three incredible kids that we adopted.

When I ask my oncologist what I can do to reduce my recurrence rate the one thing that I can do is to lose weight.
Before I moved to Texas I had been very active, I would do the Jimmy Fund walk every year for 5 years in a row and it was a 32 mile walk along the Boston Marathon route to raise money for kids with cancer. I used to go out dancing then I had a severe car accident and totaled my car and messed up my back. The pain in my back was chronic and got worst so when I moved to Texas I ended up getting an artificial disk in my lower spine. Now that my back is better I should have gotten up off my behind and started losing the weight that I gained after the car accident but I did not.

I should have stopped the weight gain at this point but I did not. A year after my back surgery we adopted our kids and then a few years later I received the cancer diagnosis. I am not trying to say that I gained weight because of the cancer because that would be a lie but I have gained a lot of weight in the last 13 years and I am not happy with myself.

I joined Weight Watchers once and I quit because I hated standing in a room with a bunch of strangers while I was being weighed. I am starting a new weight loss journey with you and I hope that this will work. Maybe if I am putting this all out there maybe I will be able to stick this weight loss and exercise plan.

About Tammy Woolard

My name is Tammy and I am 40 year old mother of 3 wonderful children who came to us through domestic adoption. Although we did not have any fertility issues we chose adoption because there are so many kids that did not ask to be born but truly want a family to love. We did research on adoption choices and decided on domestic adoption through CPS. You would be surprised the differences between each agency. The adoption process is nothing like you see in the movies. I am also a 5 year breast cancer survivor. When I was diagnosed my kids were 3, 5 and 7 I did so much research I may have driven my Dr. a little crazy but that is ok it is my body not his.
