Staying On Task

I love having a clean house, it is relaxing to me, mind and body. Unfortunately it is so much work to get it done that I used to frequently give up. My housecleaning method sounded like a really bad version of “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.” This is how it typically went for me:

I’m off to a good start, excited about having a clean house. I’m dusting the front room and I pull Hailey’s shoes out from under the coffee table. I set the dust cloth on the table and head downstairs to put the shoes away.

Once downstairs, I make her bed, pick up the laundry and grab her overflowing trashcan. I head back upstairs so I can go outside to dump her trash.

As I’m dumping the trash I notice a weed in the flower bed so I set the trash can down to pull it. When I pull it I see more, so I keep pulling weeds until the mail truck comes. I leave the pile of weeds in the driveway and grab the mail. I head into the house with the mail so I can throw the junk right in the recycling bin.

When I pull the recycling bin out, I notice it needs to be washed. I take the recycling bin to the back yard and hose it out. While I’m hosing the bin out I see that the laundry is still hanging on the line. I set the bin down so I can take down the clothes.

After I fold the clothes I take them upstairs to put them away and I notice that my shoes are a mess in the bottom of the closet. I set the laundry basket on the bed and start straightening up the shoes. I find shoes I no longer wear so I head to the garage to put them in the bin for charity.

Once in the garage……….You get the picture. I would spend all day running from one room to the next never really getting the house clean, and leaving a trail of things that still need to be put away.. All that changed when I found Flylady. Following her system I was able to stay on task and my house looks much better!

I’ll tell you more about Flylady in my next post.
