Stepping Stones

If you’d like to add stepping stones to your yard, there are several different methods you can use. You can purchase ready to use stepping stones at home improvement stores, super centers, and garden centers, or you can purchase a stepping stone kit or mold to make your own.

Some of the kits are really cute and come with embellishments such as pretty stones and jewels. They come complete with everything you need to make personalized stones. Every member of the family can make his or her own, using a handprint or writing his or her name, and then decorating.

Stepping stone molds are generally inexpensive, although this method is a bit more labor intensive and time consuming. Even so, it allows you to create exactly the stones you want, and to add more whenever you want. You’d hate to choose great looking stepping stones only to find out later when you want to add more that the style you purchased is no longer available.

You can choose from individual stepping stone molds that make one stepping stone at a time or you can select those that make an entire grouping of stones with one application. They come in many designs from those that make very simple, natural looking stones to those that are quite stylistic. Check out Garden Molds for some very attractive styles.

You can also make your own stepping stone molds. Those with straight lines are the simplest to make and can be constructed from scrap wood. Still, don’t limit yourself to squares or rectangles, also consider making hexagonal or octagonal designs for added interest.

Remember to fill in the mold with a few lengths of wire for added stability and support if you are using or making large molds. This will help keep the stones from cracking and splitting. Mix the concrete according to package directions, and allow plenty of drying time before attempting to remove stones from the molds.
