Storing Comfort Foods

When you plan your food storage I highly recommend storing comfort food. Comfort food has a wide variety of definitions. I think mostly of the food that people eat in the winter such as meat and potatoes, and heavy chowders and stews. In an emergency or high stress situation comfort foods can be expanded to foods that your family eats to help them feel better.

One type of comfort food is food, which you eat when you are sick. I think that chicken noodle soup is a common favorite. I grew up drinking Gatorade when I was sick and so I consider this a comfort food for myself. You may choose Sprite or Coke instead. These are items which important to include in your food storage. We do not drink a lot of soda in our family, and so it would be easy to keep these items on hand. It is easy to rotate them as a special treat.

Another type of comfort food is food you eat on special occasions. You may have a monthly pizza night as a family or a certain type of food that you make for family members on their birthdays. You will want to include the ingredients in your food storage for any special foods that you make. You may want to set aside money if you order pizza once a month, so that the tradition can continue for your family. You will also want to include items to make birthday cakes for family members.

You should also include other foods that your family eats which you may not consider essential. One example of this is chocolate. I find that if I have just a little bit of chocolate each day it helps me with my cravings. I do not crave as many sweets, and I find that I overeat a lot less. It may be something such as fresh fruit or a bag of potato chips or ice cream. You should plan to include a way to store these items in your food storage as well.

If you include comfort food in your food storage your family will be able to transition to food storage better. It will also make a stressful time less stressful because things will not seem as shaken up. Comfort items may be considered a luxury, but they are well worth it.
