Do you ever look at a family and just think, “Wow, they have it together!” Do you ever ask yourself, why did all of their kids go on missions, and get married in the temple, or why do they seem so close? I ask myself questions like these all the time. Sometimes, no matter what the parents might do, children will still go astray, however, we have been counseled over and over to strengthen our home and families and we have received promises from our leaders that if we do that, we will be blessed.
The visiting teaching message this month can be found here. The title is the same as my title for this post. It is about strengthening our own spiritual selves and how that will affect our families.
Sister Beck states in this article, ““The ability to qualify for, receive, and act on personal revelation is the single most important skill that can be acquired in this life.” How often are we going through life with no guidance? Do we try to make decisions for our children and families and end up feeling like we made the wrong ones? Or, are we questioning ourselves? Maybe if we the answer to some of these questions is yes, then we aren’t doing enough in the way of our own spirituality.
I think of my Mother in law and how she poured over the scriptures daily. She had a huge filing cabinet full of talks, lessons, quotes, etc. that she had categorized by church topic. She was someone who seemed to feast on the words of Christ. And, it shows in her children. Three sons. Three missions. Three temple marriages. And, while those things aren’t the end all be all of being a good person, they are good people. They are good husbands and good fathers.
I want a family like that. I want my children to grow up and know I loved the scriptures. I want them to be good people because I was able to help them grow spiritually through my own actions in spirituality. It is hard though. It is something that I believe we all struggle with, and that is why I’m grateful for this month’s message and the reminder to try a little hard to increase my own spirituality.
