Study Tips For Your Child

With school starting up again soon, I thought it might be a good idea to share some study tips I used with my students. They are pretty easy to implement at home. Why not give them a try once school begins?

-Study at the same time daily. Having a set study time helps students organize their day and allows them to realize that study time is expected at home daily. Try hard to stick to the daily time.

-Study in a quiet spot. Don’t allow your child to study in a place full of distractions. If the phone is ringing or people are walking through the room constantly, this gets distracting. Make sure your child has a quiet environment (background noise is okay) that is well lit for studying!

-Knowing what type of learner your child is can also improve study habits. If your child is a visual learner, help them to make pictures or note cards, anything they can see, and use that to study from. If your child is a tactile learner, or learns from touching, help them construct something that is hands on that may aid in the learning of the topic. What if your child learns best by hearing something? See if the textbooks are available on tape.

-If your child has reading from a textbook to complete, have them read it out loud. I know it sounds silly, but it really helps in retaining what is being read. Give it a try. Or better yet, if your child struggles with reading, why not take turns reading with him?

-A great way to study for a test is to make note cards using the boldface questions from the chapter. On one side turn the boldface chapter information into a question. On the other side of the note card, write the answer. Your child can quiz himself; or have you do it.
