Suggestions for the Herb Garden

One of the things no home should be without is the herb garden. I use a lot of herbs when cooking to add flavor. Even the smallest garden can have room for herbs. Even if you live in a unit all you need is a sunny spot and a few decent sized pots. So if you’re thinking of planting herbs here are a few suggestions.

Mint

Mint adds a lovely fresh taste to salads and is also good when added to a fruit salad or fruit punch or cool drink. Mint is better in pots as planted in the garden mint can tend run rampant and smother anything in sight.

Parsley

Plant either continental parsley or curly leaf parsley or maybe a combination of both.Of course if you’re got mint and parsley you’re half way there to making tabouli, one of my favorite salads.

Basil

Basil is another great one and you van also get purple basil that looks quite effective when added to dishes.

Chives

Chives are good in salads or added to mashed potato Marjoram

Rosemary

I have a friend who grows rosemary in a pot but ours is in the garden. We had three rosemary plants in the garden when we moved in. One we dug out because it was interfering with the azaleas. Another we gave to our son who wanted to try growing it.
The third is still in the garden.

I use rosemary when cooking roast lamb or other roasted meats. The advantage with rosemary is that it is a shrub that flowers and looks attractive in the garden. It can have mauve or blue flowers. Ours unfortunately is not blue which looks more attractive.

Others you might want to consider are coriander, tarragon, oregano, dill, thyme and sage. I’ve found thyme and sage to be herbs I don’t use as much.

Some herbs like basil, coriander and dill have a limited life and you will have to replace them each year. But given the price of buying them in the supermarket it’s still way cheaper to grow your own.
