The downside to throwing a party outside is that some amount of planning is involved. Fortunately, you don’t have to spend countless hours pouring over party plans. By following these simple tips you can impress friends and family… and actually have fun in the process:
Pick a Theme
This should be your first step. Fortunately, summer lends itself to popular party themes such as Hawaiian luaus (featuring tropical drinks, fruity desserts and hula contests), southern barbecues (complete with ribs, brisket and baked beans), and Mexican fiestas (with tacos, burritos and margaritas). More creative options include an Italian picnic with fresh pasta and hot bread. Or you could opt for an English Tea Party theme that features finger sandwiches, petit fours and gourmet iced teas. Use games and music to complete your theme.
Put Guests to Work
Once you choose your theme you can cut down on the stress and work involved with throwing a huge bash by asking guests to bring a side dish or beverage that goes along with the theme. If you don’t feel comfortable asking your guests to bring a dish to pass, then have them help out by judging dance contests or helping round up participants for a game of horseshoes.
Pay Attention to Details
You can set the tone of your party from the beginning by choosing invitations that match your theme. If you are having an informal affair, then a phone call or e-mailed invite will suffice, but if you want to go all out, design formal invitations that will hint at your party’s theme without giving it away.
