Super Bowl or Bust

Could traveling to Dallas for the Super Bowl get any harder?

Mother Nature blitzed the Big D and travelers came out the losers as they tried desperately to contend with ice, freezing temperatures and more than five inches of fresh snow on Friday.

The surprise snow storm led to the cancellation of more than 300 inbound flights to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport on Friday morning, and it shut down commercial flights at smaller city-run Dallas Love Field.

Those driving to see the Green Bay Packers battle the Pittsburgh Steelers for the Lombardi Trophy didn’t fare much better. In fact, one Super Bowl-bound fan described the highways in north Texas as “war zones.”

I live less than an hour away from Green Bay, Wisconsin, and the local news here has flooded the airwaves with the travel nightmares encountered by Packers’ faithful making the trip to Arlington, Texas, home of Cowboys’ Stadium. Many of them were booked on flights operated by American and its regional affiliate, American Eagle. More than half of the flights from Appleton, Milwaukee and Green Bay to Dallas were cancelled because of the poor weather conditions.

A husband and wife team from Green Bay profiled by one of the local news stations revealed that they had spent the money they had put away for a summer trip to Ireland to cheer on the Green in Gold in Super Bowl XLV. They didn’t want to miss out on the chance to see history being made, especially when it has been 13 years since the Packers’ last trip to the Super Bowl.

The couple told a local news reporter that they planned to stay at the airport until they got a flight out since they had already dropped more than $4,000 on game tickets, $500 a night on a hotel room in Dallas and $2,000 on plane tickets.

Super Bowl or bust? After forking over that much money… you bet.
