Surgery Recovery

Last week my toddler had her tonsils and adenoids removed. When I was 11 I had my tonsils out. A four-year-old boy had this surgery about the same time as I and he came back from recovery sitting up happy and asking to eat. I was so sick that the hospital considered keeping me another night. My husband and I decided that since Jessie needed these organs taken out, sooner was better than later. I anticipated my two-year-old recovering as quickly as that little boy.

The day of the surgery she drank more than we expected and had a wet diaper within the time period we were supposed to be watching. It took all afternoon, but she did eat the ice pop the nurses gave her after surgery. We had to refreeze it many times, but were delighted that she ate it. She spent all day on my lap and cried a lot.

The next day we had to start giving her antibiotics. It was hard enough to give her pain medicine the day of the surgery, so we were not looking forward to giving her antibiotics too. She was not as excited about drinking, having soft sugary foods, or sucking on popsicles .

The second day post surgery, Jessie was miserable. I called the doctor’s office and was advised to bring her in because the receptionist could hear her in the background. Jessie was not dehydrated, but on her way there. Jessie needed to drink something before we could leave or we’d have to go to the hospital for IV fluids.

Today was her post-op appointment. She looked a lot better than before. She drank water and was a normal naughty toddler while waiting in the exam room.

Recovery has not been easy. We go back in six weeks.
