I really enjoy going on little adventures through my home. There is always something interesting to find, and there is usually something that will help us save some money.
Taking stock of your stuff, whether it is food, furniture or otherwise can be a fun and profitable way to spend a bit of your time. You’ll discover a lot. Here are some places in your home where you can take stock and save.
The Refrigerator
It is inevitable that food items will migrate to the back of the refrigerator and get forgotten before they are finally thrown away. Instead, take a weekly stock of your own refrigerator. Challenge yourself to use up things that will so expire or things that only have a bit of food and not enough for a meal by themselves. You’ll shave money off of your food bill this way.
The Freezer
Also related to the refrigerator is the freezer. Whether you simply have a freezer attached to your fridge or a separate freezer, you are bound to find some things in there that you have forgotten about. Why not defrost that chicken instead of buying new chicken at the store. Challenge yourself to either use up or throw out (obviously using up saves more money) almost everything in your freezer before you buy new. One recent example from my life is instead of buying the kids ice cream this past week, I simply pulled out the ice cream cups I found in the freezer. They were left over from a party, and we had forgotten all about them.
The Basement
Basements are always so interesting, especially when they are used for storage. You never know what you might find down there. Exploring our basement can be like a scavenger or treasure hunt. One recent excursion for odds and ends left us with a whole bunch of items to be used for crafts, from buttons to foam. I was able to organize the finds in baskets, also found in the basement, and skip the trip to the craft store. Who knows what you might find.
