Take Ten… Seconds

Studies have shown that taking even a ten second break in a stressful situation or in the hectic rush of everyday life can make a big difference in your health. A minibreak can help lower your blood pressure, relieve tension, and ease other triggers that contribute to heart disease.

Need some ideas for a minibreak? Whether you’ve only got ten seconds or you can spare five or ten minutes, here are some minibreak suggestions to get you started. Feel free to add to the list!

  1. Read or write a positive, loving email to a friend or loved one.
  2. Take a walk around the office or around the block (if you have time).
  3. Do some gentle stretches — stretch your arms up towards the ceiling, then bend at the waist and stretch for your toes. Roll slowly up your spine while counting to eight.
  4. Browse the sale section at your favorite clothing website.
  5. Look at some pictures of your family, friends, or pets. Start with the pictures here at Families.com!
  6. Stop and smell the roses. Literally! Or the daisies, or the mums, or whatever flowers you find. No flowers around? Open the window and take a deep breath of fresh air.
  7. Turn off the lights (if you can), close your eyes, and do some slow, deep breathing.
  8. Put on your favorite song and dance! My coworkers at the radio station used to declare a dance break any time a particular favorite song came on.
  9. Open a magazine (not work related!) and read an article.
  10. Cuddle your dog or cat.
  11. Have a quick play break with your kids.
  12. Grab the lotion and give yourself a quick hand or foot rub.
  13. Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
  14. Visit a website like Cute Overload or Stuff on My Cat for a cuteness break!
  15. Play a quick, free game online or on your computer.
