Taking Care of Newborn Skin

Your newborn baby will have soft, sensitive skin that requires a little bit of special care. In addition to him or her getting the right amount of sleep, being fed on time, being provided with the best diapers, and so on, you also need to consider skin care. I remember when my son was born. I was young and very inexperienced. Unfortunately, I had no one to ask questions to so much of raising my son was through trial and error. Thank goodness, he turned into a remarkable man in spite of me.

I remember when he was around two months of age. I noticed a funny odor but couldn’t find it. At first, I thought his clothes smelled funny but that wasn’t it. I had a doctor’s appointment in a few days and figured I would ask the doctor at that time. I was so embarrassed to learn that the odor was coming from the back of his ears. I had cleaned in and around the front of the ears but had failed to clean the back. Poor thing had developed a type of fungus. The good news is that with antibiotics and a tip in skincare, he pulled out of it just fine.

Your baby’s skin will need to be handled gently. Because of this, be sure you choose products formulated specifically for your age baby. Immediately after the birth of your baby, the skin will have a deep pink, almost red color. Considering everything the baby has been through in entering the world, the skin is sore and sensitive. Therefore, even the soft touch of bedding or clothing can create a fussy baby.

When you wash your baby’s skin, use an extra soft washcloth, being very gentle. You want to wash the baby’s head, behind the ears, all of the folds in the skin, the face, arms, legs, belly, and back. Now, never wash your baby’s face with the same washcloth used for cleaning the genital area, which will help avoid transfer of bacteria.

By being gentle, using products made specifically for babies, and making bath time enjoyable, your baby will likely grow up to appreciate good hygiene. To sooth the skin after being washed, you can apply baby lotion and powder. In addition to having a clean body, your baby will smell fresh and clean.
