Taking Picture-Perfect Holiday Shots of Your Baby

If you have a newborn to show off this holiday season, then featuring him on the front of your Christmas card is a no brainer. The trick is finding a way to snap the perfect shot of your pride and joy.

When working with a young photo subject, keep the following tips in mind:

Lighting: Proper lighting is the key to great baby pictures. Natural light is the best way to illuminate your baby. Don’t rely on your camera’s flash. When you shoot with a flash, you diminish the depth of your baby’s features. To capture your infant in the best possible light, move her near a window or door.

Angles: Aim your camera at your baby’s eye level. When you shoot photos with the camera pointing down at your infant, you accentuate the size difference. Getting down to your baby’s level will minimize distortion. In addition, if your baby can see you, there is a greater chance that she will focus on you and maybe flash a smile.

Poses: Get creative when taking Christmas photos of your baby. Babies are flexible and can be placed into a number of different poses including sitting in a pool of colorful plastic balls, peeking out from under a blanket, sitting in the arms of a large stuffed animal or being swaddled by a family member.

Another great addition to the family Christmas card is a candid shot or two of your baby engaged in everyday activities, such as eating, sleeping or looking at an object. If you prefer posed shots to candid ones, then get your infant to look directly at the lens by having others call your baby’s name, wave a toy or shake a rattle near the camera.

Finally, when taking pictures of babies you will need to practice patience. Babies are phenomenally cute photo subjects, but they are often the most challenging ones to work with. Children react differently to cameras, so don’t get agitated if your baby doesn’t want to cooperate with your photo shoot.
