Teaching Internet Safety via Games

As more and more children spend time on the internet, it is important they understand about safety. Between companies trying to make offers tempting to young minds and predators lurking in dark (and sometimes bright) corners, we need to do everything possible to teach them safety. Today, game manufacturers are getting in on the game plan by putting together games that help with internet safety. I wanted to tell you about two specific games designed for this very purpose, both excellent.

The first is a game called Privacy Playground: The First Adventure of the Three Little CyperPigs. This particular game is designed specifically for children between the ages of eight and ten. As the pigs played on one of their favorite websites, they encounter all types of temptations to include spam, marketing ploys, and a ferocious wolf.

The goal of this game is to help teach children what to look for when online so they know what is good and what should be avoided. With this, children as young as eight can learn ways of protecting personal information. Most importantly, this game teaches children ways of avoiding predators. Along with the game comes a guide on how the game is played, along with helpful background information about children’s privacy.

The second game I wanted to mention is called CyberSense and Nonsense: The Second Adventure of the Three CyperPigs. This game is a sequel to the first game but geared for children from age nine through twelve. In addition to reinforcing the teaching of the first game, this second one teaches kids how to distinguish between fact and opinion, as well as deceitful online content.

The internet should be a place of learning and adventure, not a scary place. However, with so many targets reaching out to take advantage of our children we need to do everything we can to protect them. These games are carefully orchestrated to teach our children the importance of internet safety.
