Teaching Your Homeschooler about Evolution

I realize my title may seem like a huge contradiction to many Christian Homeschoolers, but if you read my last post, you will see that I believe in teaching my children about all subjects in which the human population is familiar.

Here are some sources you can use should you want to teach your child about evolution:

Life on Earth is a simple no-nonsense book that teaches the “story of evolution”. It is a children’s book, written for ages 4-8, but it contains the “facts” that will give the children the information they need, regardless of age.

The Kingfisher History Encyclopedia, used by many classical homeschoolers, and a mainstay in many homeschooling households, covers Early Man in the beginning of the book. This is the book I used to teach my children the simple “facts” that schoolchildren receive about the world. Yes, they challenged a lot of what the book says, but I always instructed then to think of each “fact” prefaced by “according to evolution”. For a more in-depth study, you can consider using The Kingfisher Book of The Ancient World.

Answers in Genesis: “Answers in Genesis is an apologetics (i.e., Christianity-defending) ministry, dedicated to enabling Christians to defend their faith, and to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ effectively.” Regardless of what tool you use to teach your children about evolution, I strongly believe you should follow that up (especially if you are Christian) with book, DVD’s, and other materials from Answers in Genesis. Titles include Ice Age, which gives a biblical explanation for the Ice Age, Creation and Cosmology, which gives and overview of the evolving theories in secular astronomy, and Evolution exposed.

Like I mentioned in my last blog post, I feel I have the responsibility to teach my children scientific theories as well as other religious philosophies. By doing this I not only make sure my children have an intelligent defense for their faith, as you cannot argue what you don’t understand, but I also refute the arguments of those who claim I am not fully educating my child.
