The Art of Recycling Halloween Costume Ideas

left

(The purr-fect costume??)

You are looking at my daughter’s darling Halloween cat costume. The one she swears she’ll never wear again.

She wore the cute and cuddly getup a couple of years ago during her All Hallows’ Eve candy collecting adventures, but don’t look for her to ever go trick-or-treating again dressed as a fluffy feline because “only little kids dress up as cats.”

P.S. She’s eight.

I spent the better half of last night explaining to her that she most certainly could dress-up as a cat again if she desired. We’d just tailor the outfit to make it look more sophisticated than snuggly; more fierce than fuzzy; more cool than cute.

She didn’t buy it.

P.S. She’s eight.

When I was eight I had already dressed up as Mr. Doobie twice for Halloween and considered keeping the streak alive for at least two more years.

I’m a big recycling fan and Halloween costume ideas are fair game. In fact, reusing a former idea is especially advantageous if you are a procrastinator. Being forced to throw together a costume for your kid at the last minute is no treat, but it doesn’t have to be all trick, if you exercise a little creativity.

For example, if you have a tween or teen who doesn’t want to go all out wearing a full-bodied cat costume, consider using items you have around the house to create a modest feline getup. Items such as black eyeliner, fake eye lashes, pink lipstick, blush, glitter eye shadow, and white face paint can be used as the foundation for a cat costume.

The white face paint can be used as the base. Next, draw on whiskers with the eyeliner, and then add an upside down triangle on the tip of your child’s nose. A pink or black nose can be created with eyeliner or lipstick. Use glitter eye shadow under your child’s brow bone. Finally, you can apply false eye lashes for extra drama or use the eyeliner to draw a line extending beyond the corner of your kid’s eye for added pizzazz.

A set of cat ears and a tail will complete the look. You could also add fake nails as claws. Depending on how dressed up your child wants to get, she could wear a black leotard or some black sweats. Or, upcycle the cat costume idea by pairing white gloves, a tall red and white striped hat, and a big red bow tie to transform your kid into the Cat in the Hat.

What are some ways you’ve recycled Halloween costume ideas?
