I am on a border kick right now.
Whereas I’ve occasionally added patterned paper borders to select scrapbook pages in the past, lately, I’ve been going out of my way to design single and double page layouts specifically with borders in mind. I had a ton of wide ribbon leftover from the holidays and I have been mixing and matching different pieces to create whimsical borders.
Of course, ribbon and scraps of fabric are not the only materials that make for eye-popping borders. I’ve had a lot of success crafting personalized borders with scrapbook stickers. For example, if you are creating a page with a train theme, you could easily design an adorable border from sticker tracks, engines, cars and cabooses.
Clip art is another embellishment that works well as a border. Last year, my mom pieced together clip art of girls holding hands around the entire perimeter of a layout dedicated to my daughter’s Girl Scout investiture ceremony. If you don’t want to feature borders around the entire page, you could create a smaller space for extra journaling or design a mini frame with materials that enhance the theme of your layout.
If you are an advanced scrapbooker, then consider arranging a collection of die cut tags in rows for a unique page border. Or, if you are looking for a way to make a pretty wedding, Easter or garden party-themed layout, craft a border from small fabric flowers. You could also attach a row of eyelets or mini brads to strips of a paper to create an edgy-looking border.
Finally, for frugal scrappers, crafting borders from leftovers is right up your alley. Collect scrap paper punches, leftover mesh, raffia, and vellum to create an eclectic border from random materials. You could also reduce the size of your favorite photos to thumbnails and use them to make fun scrapbooking borders.
