The Color of Your Sheets Can Save You Money

In a previous article about saving on luxury bedding, I talked about how you can get amazing sheets that make you feel indulged. Now, I want to share a secret that I have learned in my years of taking care of a household; the color of your sheets can actually save you money. Don’t believe me? Here is how I do it.

The biggest way that I save money on sheets is to buy them in one color: white. White sheets save us money in so many ways. The first way is by being far more long lasting than other sheets. This is because they can usually be bleached. Not only is bleaching your sheets healthier for you and your family, but it is also very practical.

How many times have you had to toss away sheets or turn them into rags because they got stained? Now I won’t go into all of the different kinds of stains that can get on sheets, because well, that might just give us all of the willies. But regardless of the stain, bleach will usually get it right out, especially if you act quickly. Or even if your sheets are stain-free, they do tend to get dull and dingy after a while, no matter what detergent you use. This is because of our natural body oils and skin flakes that sometimes build up in bedding. Bleach will freshen those sheets right up. This saves you money by eliminating the need to buy new sheets.

White sheets also tend to cost less. Perhaps this is because of the fact that a fancy designer didn’t have to come in and create a specific color collection or pattern? I don’t know, but I have observed white sheets (and other neutrals, actually) cost less.

Another way to save money on the color of your sheets? Avoid black and other dark colors, such as navy blue. Lint, saliva and other stuff tends to show up on dark sheets very quickly, and may make it necessary to launder these dark sheets more frequently than lighter colored sheets. Dark sheets also tend to fade quickly in the sun, making line drying them less of an option (hanging your laundry saves money).
