The Diary of an Overweight Mom: Day 11—“I Told Ya So”

Morning Weight: 180.8

Yep, the scale was up this morning. I suppose in my quest to NOT do “low carbohydrate” eating I wound up doing the opposite. Carbohydrate fests are no better for my body than skipping them all together. After pasta and potato salad yesterday, a few ounces was inevitable.

When I stood on the scale this morning (after sighing heavily and stepping on twice again, just to be sure there wasn’t a mistake) I thought about a few nights ago. My husband and I were in the bathroom together brushing our teeth before bed. I turned to step on the scale. I liked the number staring back at me. It showed my progress. Then my husband stepped on (he weighs less than me by the way which is an entirely different story but may I just say, UGH!). Curious, I stepped on again after him. To my shock, my weight was up two pounds. So I made him get on again. And his weight was up a pound and a half. We did this a few more times, because now we were understandably addicted. Each time the numbers changed. The moral of the story? Scales with ounces are good—but they’re also dangerous. They fluctuate. And they, like all other scales, are annoying. So much so that I contemplate throwing mine out the window every few days or so. But then that little voice calls to me to remain calm—the scale is my friend…right? NOT.

Today I made a strong effort to “behave” during meals. I skipped breakfast because I had a physical (I’ll tell you all about THAT tomorrow—trust me, you don’t want to miss it) and we ate lunch out. As in, at a restaurant. As in, oops, I really meant to order the salad but the double cheeseburger with bacon called my name and I couldn’t refuse. Only this time, I did refuse. I ordered salmon. Here’s why: I don’t eat fish. I’m trying and in truth, when salmon is prepared with teriyaki sauce it’s pretty tasty. So ordering salmon today ensured I wouldn’t be overeating, since the salmon came with veggies only. Tonight for dinner, I watched my portions, so the few carbs I did consume should be safe. They better be, otherwise I’m quite possibly going to superglue my lips shut for the next two weeks (Just kidding, don’t try that at home. No really, don’t).

How’d your day shape up? Sure wish I’d exercised. No hope of that though for the next few days. My parents are coming into town and there are more important things to do—like catching up.

Here’s how my day went:

Breakfast: Skipped—these things must be done when one gets a physical which includes a cholesterol check.

Lunch: Ate out—Ginger salmon with green beans and broccoli—yummy

Dinner: A small portion of flank steak, Turkish green beans, ½ cup orzo with lemon and parsley.
