The Don’ts of Working with Trade Contractors

Just as there are important steps to take when hiring a trade contractor, you also have a list of things you should not do. Hiring trade contractors is a key factor in the building of a new home. These craftsmen will be building the home so you want the best. While it might take time to locate the right contractors, this time is definitely well spent.

First, any contractor you hire has to understand the business and specifically, the area of expertise in which he or she is working. Obviously, this means having years of experience, being licensed, and coming with excellent references. Unless you can verify the skill level of the contractor, you need to realize that you are actually taking a risk. That means while the home may be completed to spec, it might also fall short, costing you precious time and money.

Next, make sure the contactor is prepared for the job. That means that all the tools and supplies are available and ready and that the schedule is firm. If the contractor is not prepared, you will find yourself in a big mess. The contractor needs to have any subcontractors in place if the job is large, understand the timeframe in which it will take to have the job done, and be prepared to take responsibility for the overseeing and completion of the home.

Finally, we strongly recommend that you not allow the lowest price to sway you. Sure, we all want something wonderful without having to pay a fortune and perhaps the lowest price would be the best deal but not always. Contractors commonly battle each other for business, meaning they reduce prices and lowball. Unfortunately, while some of this is the nature of the business, you have another group of contractors that price low because they do not have the right tools or the needed crew. For this reason, comparison-shopping is so vital.

By applying the don’ts in your search for the best trade contractors, you will end up a happy customer. With the right people, your home will begin to take shape, soon standing as a completed home. If you are unsure where to find quality trade contractors, you can again check with your local building association, the NHQ, or check with the Chamber of Commerce for recommendations.
