The Incredible Edible Egg and Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a time in a woman’s life that demands protein. Without sufficient protein, the baby cannot grow properly and well. Babies are basically “built” out of protein. As such pregnant women are encouraged to eat anywhere from eighty to one hundred and ten grams of protein every single day. Eating so much protein may seem like and impossible feat, but there exists a very compact protein and nutrient packed food that can help meet the protein needs of almost all pregnant women. This amazing protein source is the incredible edible egg.

Perfectly packaged in an ellipsoid shape, the single egg boasts of seven to nine grams of protein (depending on size) and only seventy five calories. That is a lot of protein for so few calories! But that is not all, the egg contains all the essential amino acids which are essential for the proper development of hormones, skin, body tissues, and babies (among other things)! Eggs are also a good source of lutein and zeaxanthin which aid in eye health. Eggs supply numerous vitamins and minerals including Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, and sulphur all of which contribute to a healthy immune system.

Eggs are also a great brain food. Eggs possess the good kind of fat that helps maintain healthy brain tissue. Additionally, eggs have choline which is known to aid in the healthy development of not only the brain but also both the nervous system and cardiovascular system.

Contrary to past belief that the yolk of the egg supplied too much cholesterol resulting in clogged arteries, studies have now found that the “cholesterol” contained in the yolk of the egg is actually beneficial. There are two kind of cholesterol, good and bad. Eggs contain the good cholesterol while hydrogenated oils would be considered bad cholesterol which actually clog arteries. Bottom line: studies have shown that persons who eat eggs regularly (two per day) have not seen a negative impact on their lipid levels.

Eggs are an amazing little food that supply an impressive amount of protein, vitamins, and minerals, perfect for pregnant mommies!
