The Lion King In 3-D

The Lion King has long been one of my favorite Disney movies. It was the first movie I took my daughter to as a toddler so just the thought of it brought back memories.. When they released the 3-D version, I couldn’t wait to take her again.

I was pleased to see that they hadn’t altered the original movie at all. Besides adding the 3-D aspect it was the same movie we have known and loved for seventeen years. All your favorite characters were there, along with the familiar story line.

One of the most enjoyable things about watching the movie was the audience. It seemed that everyone who was there already had a love for the movie. During the songs we all know so well, especially Hakuna Matata, and the hula scene with Timon and Pumba, the entire theater was singing along. It made this wonderful family movie seem like even more of a family experience.

Now on to what I didn’t like. There really was no reason to release this in 3-D, it isn’t like scary movies where things fly at you so the 3-D increases the effect. If anything I felt that being in 3-D made the movie more cartoonish.

Lion King has long been one of my favorite movies and, for an animated feature, there were some really majestic scenes, the 3-D effect took that majesty away.

I think it will be a fun movie to take little ones to because seeing the Lion King on the big screen is a great experience, and if all audiences are as involved as the one we were part of last night, that will make it even more fun for the kids. For the rest of us, remember the first time you saw the original on the big screen because it really does lose something in 3-D.
