The Ordinariness of Life Is Quite Extraordinary

Do you appreciate the ordinary events of day-to-day living? I think too often we look at those as nothing more than drudgery. We are just making it from one day to the next.

Sometimes it takes a rocking of our world to cause us to appreciate those unremarkable moments in life. Never have I felt this as much as I did a couple of weeks ago when our family went through a traumatic situation.

I know I have referenced this a few times in my blogs and I feel a little guilty that I haven’t been able to expand on it. With time perhaps I can but my hope is to at least get you thinking about the importance of everyday moments that are so often taken for granted.

The situation I am referring to kept me physically from my home for two days. But emotionally, I wasn’t there for nearly a week.

I found myself longing for the simplicity of life. My normal routine of getting up and started with the day, dropping my children off at school, working here at home, talking about their day when I picked them up, making dinner and other moments that we might consider to be insignificant.

All of this caused me to really appreciate the ordinariness of my life because I wanted it back so desperately. I even missed the sometimes frustrating moments that happen, such as trying to wake my son up in the morning, reminding my children of chores that were left uncompleted, asking about a grade that had dropped and if they were ever going to clean that room.

As moms, I think we can sometimes get so caught up in the daily living that we fail to recognize how extraordinary it all really is. Life itself is amazing. The fact that we have the ability to raise and parent our children, to nurture our families, to take care of their needs and yes, to deal with the challenges that come our way.

Honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. And if you ask me, the ordinariness of life is quite extraordinary.
