The Return of the Jonas Brothers

If you have tween or teen girls in your house, you’d better plug your ears: the Disney channel has renewed both of the Jonas Brothers’ television series. “JONAS,” the hit sibling band’s sitcom-style series, will return mid-2010. Meanwhile, season 2 of “Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream,” will debut earlier in 2010.

“Living the Dream,” the Jonas Brothers’ short-form reality series, is likely returning earlier because it can be filmed while the brothers focus on other projects, such as their current European tour.

Gary Marsh, President of Entertainment of Disney Channels Worldwide, says of the show, “We can deliver something to our viewers that no one else can—exclusive, behind-the-scenes access to the real-life adventures of one of the superstar bands of our time.”

The brothers’ other show, “JONAS,” will begin filming in February. The upcoming season finds Kevin, Joe, and Nick packing up their house in New Jersey and taking a summer road trip adventure out to L.A. There, the boys shadow big Hollywood directors, compete for roles in movies, work on their music, and, of course, surf.

They are accompanied to California by their friends Stella and Macy (actresses Chelsea Staub and Nicole Anderson, returning from the previous season), and friend/security chief Big Rob (well-known to Jonas fans as the brothers’ real life head of security Rob Feggans). In addition to committing to new seasons of their shows, the Jonas Brothers have also completed filming on their latest Disney Channel original movie. “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam” will air in the summer of 2010.

Fans, who adore the Jonas Brothers’ music, haven’t been forgotten. Nick Jonas is working on his solo effort, “Nick Jonas and The Administration.” That album will likely hit stores in 2010. But don’t worry, that doesn’t mean the end of the Jonas Brothers. Knowledgeable fans will recall that Nick actually started out as a solo act in 2003-2004. It was only later that his brothers joined him to create a family band.

Given the extreme success of the Jonas Brothers, fans needn’t worry that the siblings are parting ways. Nick’s return to his solo roots is likely just a much-needed break from the intense scrutiny and pressure surrounding his work with his brothers. With two shows and a movie lined up for 2010, it looks like the Jonas Brothers won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.

I have to admit I’m a bit amazed by the list of accomplishments and accolades the Jonas Brothers have accumulated in such a short time. “JONAS” is No. 1 in its time slot for the Disney Channel’s main child-to-tween demographic. The ambitious brothers have also won numerous awards and currently hold the No. 3 spot for highest-grossing 3-D concert film.

Even though I grew up in the era of boy bands (New Kids on the Block, Backstreet Boys, N*Sync, Hanson, etc.), I can’t recall any of those bands, for all their immense popularity, dominating the field in so many genres. The Jonas Brothers even have a book on the New York Times best-seller list.

All this leaves me to wonder where the Jonas Brothers might go from here. Will they develop quieter, but still successful careers, like former Disney Channel star Hilary Duff, or will they continue to dominate the charts? With all the Jonas Brothers have on their plates, let’s hope for their sake, and the sakes of their countless fans, that they don’t burn out anytime soon.
