The Sunday Evening Review: January 21, 2007

We saw many changes in the homeschool blog this week. We said see ya’ round to Valorie, who is writing for another families.com blog, and hello to a brand new blogger, Karen. Keep an eye out for guest blogs from Valorie. We also spent some time visiting with bloggers from other categories.

Our blogs meandered through different topics and issues in the homeschooling world, but for the most part, one good blog led to another. We started the week with a guest blog by Julie Gentry entitled Trusting Your Instincts: Know When to Say No in which Julie discussed how children and their parents should have the right to say no to different situations when they do not feel comfortable.

Monday was Martin Luther King Day. In honor of King Day I wrote articles entitled How Would Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Feel about Homeschooling and Vocabulary Word of the Day: Dignity (dig-ni-tee) . Interestingly enough, the King posts led to a discussion on plagiarism, which led to the blog, Teach Your Homeschooler About Plagiarism.

Deciding to change the subject for a bit, I wrote If You Really Want My Opinion, Perhaps You Should Not Homeschool pointing out that an opinion is just that. Next we got into a discussion on homeschoolers rights here, and worldwide, with Homeschoolers Had to Fight for the Right to Homeschool and Hope for European Homeschoolers. I also introduced you to a homeschooled adult named Theresa in the series Profile of a Homeschooled Adult. It is in 3 parts. (Please do a search on the site for this series. The word adult in the url, keeps me from linking to it) … note to self, do not use the word Adult in a blog title.

On January 18, we were honored with the introduction of Karen Edminsten to the homeschooling blog. She followed her introduction with an account of Beginning Homeschooling with Minimal Support. Karen also gives encouragement to new homeschoolers with Don’t Let Homeschooling Jitters Discourage You.

A discussion on the families.com forums let to a blog about How Homework Led to Homeschooling, part 1 and 2.

Meanwhile, Julie Gentry popped in to delight us with a series of blogs on Homeschooling and scouts: Our Story, David Finds a Troop, and Using Scouting to Fulfill Academic Requirements.

Julie’s last blog got me thinking about fulfilling requirements with hobbies. These blogs were followed by How to Align Hobbies and Curriculum and Aligning Subjects for Efficient Homeschooling.

Karen then poses the question, What kind of homeschooler are you? She follows that blog with a series on Read-alouds. Starting Read-Alouds and More Benefits of Frequent Read Alouds encourages reading to, and with children.

The last blog of the week, Homeschooling and Animal Planet came about after watching Animal Planet with my kids.

Note: Karen is a new blogger at families.com, so all of the posts she wrote this week may not be live yet. Please go check out her blog page and show her some love.
