The Ten Best Things about the Annual Father Son Campout

This weekend my husband is taking our son on his first father son campout with the stake. While I worry a bit since my son is only two, I know that he will absolutely love it. It’s a chance for him to spend some quality time with his dad. Plus he will get to look at, touch and possibly eat things that I never would allow. This is a timeless tradition that dates back as far as I can possibly remember. It is in May every year. Here are the ten best things about the father son camp outs.

10. The rain—Without fail it will rain at some point during the campout. The rain may only last ten minutes, but everything will get very, very, very wet. You will need to set up the tent to dry in the backyard, when your husband gets home.

9. The ants in the pancake batter that the deacons made for everyone to eat. Only you don’t understand why the deacons aren’t eating until it is a little too late.

8. The homemade boat race—A race to the bottom of the lake.

7. Sleeping in a tent with a two-year-old when he wants his mommy!

6. Mom’s night off! Yeah right we get to shop for the food, pack the supplies and clean up the mess when they get home.

5. Teaching your son how to filet his first fish, that is barely two inches long.

4. Swimming in mud—since mom isn’t there to stop you.

3. Learning why the first two things a Boy Scout learns is first aid for burns and cuts.

2. Coming home to crash on the couch, while your wife deals with the sugar filled overtired boys.

1. Creating memories that you can bring up to your grandsons about the crazy things their Dad did when he was their age.
