The Week in Review: November 4

It seems like the weeks go by so fast! I can hardly believe that we are just a few weeks away from Thanksgiving. (Thank goodness I’m not cooking!) We all know what comes after Thanksgiving though–Christmas preparations! In any case, ‘tis the season to fall behind in homeschooling!

This was a light week for the homeschooling blog largely because the season to catch up with homeschooling is now, before the holidays hit! Regardless, we still had a great week and as always I welcome your comments and suggestions.

We finished the series of what your kindergartner should know by talking about objectives for Math. I always say this, but it is important to remember that many early skills are developmental. You don’t need to be stressed if your child doesn’t know something on these lists. We will begin working through 1st grade this coming week.

Somewhere on my list of kindergarten objectives, was listed safety and health objectives as well. However, I don’t want you to think of health and safety issues as checklist that once checked you’re done with. So instead, I wrote a separate blog on what you should be teaching with regards to safety. Please take the time to check it out if you haven’t already.

Yesterday we talked about homeschooling in Nebraska. You can assume this means have gone through states A-N now. If you have missed your state, you can look it up using the key words: homeschooling in (your state). All of my blogs on state laws have been tagged this way. It is extremely important to remember to know your state laws regarding homeschooling.

Just this morning, we have our final blog for the week regarding home school critics who compare what their children know to your child’s knowledge base. This is part of our regular Deschooling Series where we have been tackling commonly held beliefs in education. Deschooling is one of the first steps in home schooling children who began their educational experience out of the home. Simply put, it means helping your kids get rid of any negative associations that they have with learning.

Is there something you’d like to see in the homeschooling blog? A great idea that you have? If so, I’d love to hear about it! You can look soon for some ideas on incorporating holiday preparation with home schooling!
