Things Happening at SCGS Jamboree -Day One

piggy bank The Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree will take place on June 8, June 9, and June 10 of 2012. This will be the forty-third annual SCGS Jamboree. Are you considering attending it? To help you decide, I have a short list of some of what will be happening on the first day of the Jamboree.

Most genealogy events, or conferences, are packed with classes, presentations, and a plethora of other interesting things. The Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree is no exception. Just like on the Pre-Event day, the first day of the Jamboree will have more happening than I can fit into this blog. Here are a few of the things that I think will be interesting to see on June 8, 2012.

There is a schedule of events that has been put together by the SCGS about the Jamboree. There is potential that some things may change between now, and when the Jamboree will start. I would advise checking the official schedule again as we get closer to the event.

On the first day, there will be a tour of the SCGS Family Research Library. The tour will begin at 8:30 and will end at noon. Transportation from the hotel where the Jamboree is happening, to the Library, and back, will be provided. You can explore the library, but you won’t be able to use the computers in it at this time.

You can take part in the Genealogy World Roundtable Discussions. This will take place in a small group setting. People will be able to share experiences in genealogy, suggest search strategies, and ask and answer questions about researching ancestors from across the globe. There will be hosts from SCGS who will keep the conversation moving.

Thomas MacEntee, a big name in genealogy, will present a class called “Internet Killed the Family History Star – How Technology Has Changed the Face of Genealogy”. This class will teach you how to stay on top of new technology that can help you to do your genealogy research. It will also keep you informed about the tried and true methodologies of genealogy research.

Leland Meitzler will be presenting a class that I think all genealogists can benefit from. It is called “Genealogy on the Cheap – Finding Your Ancestors When You Really Can’t Afford It”. This lecture gives genealogists plenty of tips and suggestions about how to pursue your favorite hobby with little or no money spent. If you are unemployed, or underemployed, then you will definitely want to check out this class!

These are just a few of the interesting things that will be happening at Day One of the Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree. I would recommend reading over the complete schedule to find out more information. I selected some things that would interest me if I were attending. Your choices may vary.
